Even through all of the battle preparation Terkura made time for Iveh. On a cold, quiet night he took an unescorted ride to her dwelling to ease his mind of all the stress of battle preparations.

“Iveh, I’m sure you know by now what’s about to happen?”

“Yes, my King, I do,” Iveh replied, wearing her sadness on her face.

“You disapprove?” King Terkura asked, noticing the look on her face.

“Of course I disapprove. You want me to be happy that you’re about to kill each other?”

“So it is him you love, is that it?”

“I didn’t say that, so why are you hearing it, my King? Did the two of you ever stop to think of what this could do to me? If any of you dies, it will tear me apart. And when the people find out the real reason why all of this happened, can you imagine the names they would call me in the streets? The way even children will sing songs in mockery of me?”

“Any man, woman, or child who does that will answer to me. They wouldn’t dare!”

“Please, don’t do this, I beg you,” Iveh pleaded, kneeling and grabbing both of Terkura’s hands.

“It is too late for that. I told you, I would wage war on gods and men for you, those weren’t mere words, I meant it.”

“So you’re just going to ride into Otukpo and fight until you kill him? You were friends, brothers!”

“No brother of mine would seek the heart of a woman he knows belongs to me. It is as you said, I will ride into Otukpo and kill every weapon-wielding warrior until I get to Okpoju and take his head off his shoulders,” the King said, seeing the image so vividly in his head it almost felt real. “He is preparing his warriors, but he won’t see me coming, I shall go like a thief in the night, when they are snoring in bed. It will be on the last night of this sennight. That night, Okpoju’s soul will be received by Alekwu.”

At the mention of this Iveh’s eyes swayed left to right; she had to save Okpoju.
